Madrona Point

For ease of access, it’s hard to beat Madrona Point, just a few blocks from downtown Eastsound. This small peninsula of land now belongs to the Lummi Indian Nation (the federal government bought it from developers in the 1980s and gave it to the Lummi) but is open to the public. Get here by following Haven Road south from Eastsound past the Odd Fellows Hall to the park, where you will also find a county dock for launching boats and kayaks. Madrona Point is aptly named, with tall and colorful Pacific madrone (aka madrona) trees, along with graceful Douglas firs framing the view across the water to Eastsound and the rest of Orcas Island. A meadow on the point contains camas plants; the bulbs of the purple great camas were a prized food source for the Coast Salish.
